Wine Grape Selections

Wine Selections

Making wine is a tradition that has been practiced for centuries and the technology has changed greatly over the last three decades. Wine Making has become a popular hobby that is less expensive than store bought wine's and tastes almost as good, if not equal to the more expensive store brands. More and more Canadians are trying their skills with making and bottling wine for personal use. Each type of grape delivers its unique flavor and aroma, below is a brief description of what you would expect from each selection.

ALICANTE | A good blending grape. One of the few red grape varieties that has red pulp as well a red skin. Makes intense, dark purplish wines that may be rather neutral in flavor and low in acid.

BARBERA | Barbera is a red Italian wine grape variety that, as of 2000, was the third most-planted red grape variety in Italy (after Sangiovese and Montepulciano). It produces good yields and is known for deep color, low tannins and high levels of acid (which is unusual for a warm climate red grape).

CABERNET SAUVIGNON | On the vine they are red, small, and tough. The wines tend to taste like blackberries and cedar. The grape contains a lot of tannin, which leads to a good red wine when properly aged. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world's most widely recognized red wine grape varieties.

CARIGNAN | This grape is often blended with Cinsaut, Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre and Merlot. It was crossed to Cabernet Sauvignon to give Ruby Cabernet.

GRENACHE | Grenache is most often used for rose wine. It is the second most planted grape in the world. Wines made with grenache tend to be sweet and fruity, with little tannin.

MERLOT | This is an early ripening grape, with gentle flavors of cherry, honey, and sometimes mint. It has less tannin than some of its red cousins.

MUSCAT | This is a very grapey-tasting grape that doesn't ripen easily. Their color ranges from white to near black. Muscat almost always has a pronounced sweet floral aroma.

PINOT NOIR | Pinot noir is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera.

SANGIOVESE | Sangiovese has fresh fruity flavours of strawberry and a little spiciness, but it readily takes on oaky, even tarry, flavors when aged in barrels. Sangiovese was already well known by the 16th century.

SAUVIGNON BLANC | Sauvignon Blanc is a green-skinned grape variety which originates from the Bordeaux region of France.

SYRAH | This is a dark, tannic, fruity grape. It sometimes has smoky or chocolaty tones to it.

THOMPSON SEEDLESS | Flavoring other wines or eating. Rarely used for wine on it's own. Thompson Seedless grapes have a delicate and unique flavor and are especially noted for their sweetness and golden color.

ZINFANDEL | The grapes typically produce a robust red wine, although a semi-sweet rosé (blush-style) wine called White Zinfandel has six times the sales of the red wine in the United States. The grape's high sugar content can be fermented into levels of alcohol exceeding 15 percent. The taste of the red wine depends on the ripeness of the grapes from which it is made. Red berry fruits like raspberry predominate in wines from cooler areas, whereas blackberry, anise and pepper notes are more common in wines made in warmer areas and in wines made from the earlier-ripening Primitivo clone.
